Congratulations to the UHS Girls Tennis Team
The UHS Girls Tennis Team competed on Friday and Saturday in the California High School Girl's Tennis Classic Championship.
The team, Katie Plunkett, Haley Woolf, Hannah Plunkett, Jackie Tung, Allison Chu, Tiffany Chen, Sally Larsen, Megan Baugh, Aly Dahl, Jenna Orcutt, Olivia Widmer, Johanna Omnihus, Samantha Inuyue and Franziska Wilhelm made UHS proud!
They won four straight matches and lost in a close match in the final to Buchanan.
They finished second in their division (out of 12 teams).

Congrats Young Writers! I would like to thank all of the students who submitted work and/or attended last week's 30th annual Young Writers' conference at CSUF. I appreciated your maturity and enthusiasm. Way to show your Phoenix pride, young authors! Congratulations to several students whose works were published in this year's Spectrum.
Liz Bushman won the English Department Chair's award for her nonfiction piece, "Contemplation" and Meghan Jensen's lyric essay "Pedestal in the Shop Window" won the San Joaquin Literary Association award. Way to GO!! Meghan also received honorable mention for her fiction piece "Monroe the Musician," and her poem "Falling Horse 20." Congratulations to Stephanie Loomer and Adrienne Mullanax for representing UHS at the 2010 All State Honor Band-CA Band Directors Association-CBDA.
The final concert was held on Sunday, February 21st at the Saroyan Theatre. The concert was amazing and garnered standing ovations!

UHS WINS! UHS WINS! UHS WINS! This past Saturday, the University High Academic Decathlon team won its first Fresno County Championship,defeating Edison and 25 other schools. The team took home an amazing total of 47 medals: 21 Gold, 15 Silver, and 11 Bronze. In addition, UHS placed 2nd in the Super Quiz, and all 9 team members won a total of $6,500 in scholarships. Amongst all of the accolades, the most notable individual accomplishments are as follows:

Congratulations Tiffany Chen. Tiiffany recently advanced to seminfinalist standing in the YES (Young Epidemiology Scholars) Competition, which is sponsored by the College Board. In order to qualify, Tiffany submitted a 28-page research paper, titled "An Epidemiologic Analysis of Kidney and Renal Pelvis Cancer in California." The next phase of the competition will take place on April 17-20, 2009 in Washington, D.C. In this phase of the competition Tiffany will be required to make a 12-minute oral presentation to a panel followed by 10-minutes of Q&As. Good luck Tiffany! |

| Science Olympiad Regional Results During the Science Olympiad competition at Fresno State this Saturday, March 7th, the A team from UHS came in second with 5 1st place medals, 5 2nd place medals, and 4 3rd place medals. The B team came in 5th place with 1 1st place medal, 1 second place medal, and 4 3rd place medals. The C team came in 7th with 1 1st place medal, 1 second place medal, and 3 third place medals. The UHS Mock Trial Team was honored by the Fresno County Office of Education. At the awards banquet, we had several students who were given special recognition. Shaun Lichti, Jonathan Buller, and Rebecca Miller were singled out for Honorable Mention while Zach Kissinnger, Christy Yin, Jacob Williams, Elizabeth Bushman, Alex Larralde, Jacob Matsushita, and Cassandra Asanuma were selected for Achievement Awards.

Academic Decathlon Completes a Successful Weekend - The UHS Academic Decathlon Team had its most successful competition this Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the annual Fresno County competition. The first time in UHS history, the team took first place in the Super Quiz competition. The team finished a very close 2nd -place in the closest competition in over a decade. Special congratulations go to Erin Yeagle who was the top scorer in the County. This is the fourth time in seven years that UHS has won this distinction. Every member of the team won at least one medal, and was awarded a total of $5,000 in savings bonds.
The entire team of Albert Chang, David Matsushita, Erin Yeagle, Carolynn Jimenez, Nathan Matteson, Alex Peterson, Taylor Barry, Zachary Bernel and Jared Rorabaugh would like to extend their deepest appreciation and thanks to the fanatical support the UHS fans showed at both the Super Quiz and Awards Ceremony. UHS Swim Team Last month, the UHS swim team made their presence known at the Clovis West Invite and the team continued to do the same at the Division II CIF Championships held in Bakersfield this past weekend. Both Aubrey and Genevieve swam extremely well and posted personal best times. Aubrey started off the day by taking 2nd place in the 200 Individual Medley and a short time later, Genevieve followed up with a fifth place in the 50 Freestyle. Later in the day, both of the girls competed in the 100 Breaststroke recording times that placed Genevieve in 2nd and Aubrey in 3rd. Congratulations to both girls for representing UHS swimming this year and we are all looking forward to a bright future. |

| JCL Congratulations to all the students who attended this year's state convention. UHS took 3rd place for overall score (medium school division)-our highest placement ever! We also had students who placed in academics, music, and sports. Josh Roberts and Ethan Catsro placed FIRST in the Battle of the Bands, while Max Krongaus, Jiro Egawa, Brian Arellano, and Jon Chu placed THIRD. Erin Yeagle, Merle Groneweg, and Taylor Ashlock had SECONDS and Honorable Mentions in academic tests/competitions. Aspen Flynn, Hannah Ruble, Judy Farrow, and Rianna Issac placed FIRST in the girls 4x400. Lastly, Byron Walker, Matt Lennon, Tim Pilegard, Zaven Ohanian, and Ethan Castro entered every boys running race they could and took a SECOND place in the boys 4x400 and were very close in several other races. Congratulations to the Academic Decathlon Team that competed at the county-wide competition on the Fresno State campus on February 2. The team finished a
strong 2nd out of 24 schools, and is in the running for a qualifying spot for the state
championship. In addition, Kevin Chen beat out over 300 students to win the top scorer in
the county, and $2,500! The entire team took home a total of $4,500.
