New Bulletin Items (1-15)
AUDITIONS Winter Session Play, "The Nerd" Auditions for "The Nerd" will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30 and Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in Room 11. A play synopsis and character descriptions may be found online at Wikipedia, "The Nerd". Auditionees should come prepared with paper and pencil and be available for call-backs on Oct. 3rd. Crew sign-up sheets will be available at auditions and those signing up need not stay until 7:00. This is a wildly funny comedy and should be a really enjoyable show for performers and audience alike. Mr. Schlievert
Stock Market Club Meeting There will be a meeting Monday Sept. 29 in room 10 at 12:15. The rules for the stock market game will be given and signups for teams will also take place. If you cannot attend please see Mr. Gile if you wish to compete. Signups are limited to 5 teams of 4 students.

Magic of The Arts Update
Sign-ups for tickets are still being taken in the school office. We are pleased to announce that half of our $25 Premium Reserved seats have been SOLD during our first calling session. A HUGE thanks to all the families who purchased tickets so far. Please sign your name and cell number in the school office and you will be called in the order of the sign-ups.
Host Families Needed: Week of October 7th - October 11th
This fall, a choir from the oldest school in Germany, the Gymnasium Paulinum (founded in 797), will visit Fresno beginning October 7 for a week of concerts, school exchanges and sightseeing. (You may recall that two years ago the Sunnyside High School choir visited Munster on their Sister City Tour and did an exchange with the Gymnasium Paulinum.)
The culmination of their week in Fresno will be a concert on October 11 with our own Fresno County Youth Choir.
20 host families have been recruited so far, but still need 6 or 7 more.
We are looking for host families to house one or two students during their visit.
As a host family, your responsibilities would be: Transportation (drop off in the morning, pick up in the evening) Morning meal and one or two evening meals Safe and healthy environment

Parent Volunteers Needed
Parents with trucks and several strong people needed to assist the Music Department with the hauling of choir risers to the upcoming UHS Music Venues.
Dates: November 8 (Magic of the Arts), December 4th and May 7th. We also need volunteers for Drama events in January and the end of May.
The goal is to have a list of at least 10-15 parents with trucks and at least 15 really strong people to help with the heavy lifting.

She would like to have volunteers informed, ready and willing to work well in advance of the first event on Nov. 8th.

PSAT
The PSAT will be administered to all 9th-11th grade students on Wednesday, October 15th. The PSAT/NMSQT is practice for the real SAT, which most students will need to take in order to apply for college. The PSAT/NMSQT is also used as the basis for qualification in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program in a student's junior year.
In order for students to receive their scores, they need to submit $15 to their English teachers by September 30th. Please make all checks payable to "University High School."
Mock Trial Mock Trial Auditions will be held NEXT Thursday and Friday, October 3 and 4. They will be held in Rm. 9 with Mrs. Downer from 12:05-12:55. You only need to attend on one day and do not need anything prepared in advance. Information will be given about our competitions on the day of the try-outs. See you all there!

Ice Breaker Dance The Ice Breaker Dance will be Oct. 17. It will be at the Gateway Ice Center. Tickets are $8 for the next two weeks and $10 the week of the event and at the door. Skates and entrance fee are included. Come have fun skating and meeting the new faces here school. Tickets are being sold in room 4, at lunch and after 7th period.

2009-2010 Student Member State Board of Education Attention Juniors!
There is a position open for a student member of the state board of education.
Who is eligible? Any California public high school student who will be a senior in good standing in 2009-2010 and who will be available to attend a state-wide conference of school district student leaders from November 1-5, 2009.
What is the position? The student member is a full voting member of the State Board of Education, the agency that sets policy for the state's public elementary, middle, and high schools.
What is the commitment? The student meber (1) attends all meetings of the State Board (at least two days every other month, plus special meetings) usually in Sacramento, travel expenses paid by State Board; (2) gives sufficient time to study the issues before the State Board; and (3) assumes responsibility of a full member of the State Board
Whaen are applications due? Applications must be received in the State Board of Education Office no later than Monday, October 20, 2008.

More Phantom of the Opera Tickets!! We have been able to get more tickets to the show. The price for these tickets is $76 (because of the extra fees). They are center seats like the original $75 tickets. They are on a first come first serve basis starting on Monday Sept. 29. There are only 12 tickets available.

We are pleased to announce that half of our $25 Premium Reserved seats have been SOLD during our first calling session this past Saturday in only one hour! A HUGE thanks to all the families who purchased tickets so far. Please sign your name and cell number in the school office and you will be called in the order of the sign-ups.
Host Families Needed: Week of October 7th - October 11th
This fall, a choir from the oldest school in Germany, the Gymnasium Paulinum (founded in 797), will visit Fresno beginning October 7 for a week of concerts, school exchanges and sightseeing. (You may recall that two years ago the Sunnyside High School choir visited Munster on their Sister City Tour and did an exchange with the Gymnasium Paulinum.)
The culmination of their week in Fresno will be a concert on October 11 with our own Fresno County Youth Choir.
20 host families have been recruited so far, but still need 6 or 7 more.
We are looking for host families to house one or two students during their visit.
As a host family, your responsibilities would be: Transportation (drop off in the morning, pick up in the evening) Morning meal and one or two evening meals Safe and healthy environment

Dates: November 8 (Magic of the Arts), December 4th and May 7th. We also need volunteers for Drama events in January and the end of May.

PSAT
The PSAT will be administered to all 9th-11th grade students on Wednesday, October 15th. The PSAT/NMSQT is practice for the real SAT, which most students will need to take in order to apply for college. The PSAT/NMSQT is also used as the basis for qualification in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program in a student's junior year.
In order for students to receive their scores, they need to submit $15 to their English teachers by September 30th. Please make all checks payable to "University High School."

2009-2010 Student Member State Board of Education Attention Juniors!
There is a position open for a student member of the state board of education.
Who is eligible? Any California public high school student who will be a senior in good standing in 2009-2010 and who will be available to attend a state-wide conference of school district student leaders from November 1-5, 2009.
What is the position? The student member is a full voting member of the State Board of Education, the agency that sets policy for the state's public elementary, middle, and high schools.
What is the commitment? The student meber (1) attends all meetings of the State Board (at least two days every other month, plus special meetings) usually in Sacramento, travel expenses paid by State Board; (2) gives sufficient time to study the issues before the State Board; and (3) assumes responsibility of a full member of the State Board
When are applications due? Applications must be received in the State Board of Education Office no later than Monday, October 20, 2008.

His area of investigation was in astronomy and number theory/cryptography. There is a position open for a student member of the state board of education.
Who is eligible? Any California public high school student who will be a senior in good standing in 2009-2010 and who will be available to attend a state-wide conference of school district student leaders from November 1-5, 2009.
What is the position? The student member is a full voting member of the State Board of Education, the agency that sets policy for the state's public elementary, middle, and high schools.
What is the commitment? Travel Club Starting up Ever thought of taking an adventurous trip to somewhere you have never been before? Here is you chance. Travel Club is getting organized for the summer of 2010. We are planning a trip to Paris, Southern France, and Spain. We will have a meeting in room 18 at 5:30 on Thursday Sept. 25. Parents and students (Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors) that are interested should come to the meeting. This is the best time to sign up as the price and payment plan will never be better than now. FPU on Campus Today Come to Mr. Roberts room at lunch to meet with a representative from FPU. Fresno Pacific integrates principles of Christian faith and living with career preparation in all areas of the liberal arts and sciences. It is best known for its teacher education programs, with business and Bible/Christian ministries the next largest. The 42-acre suburban campus in the central San Joaquin Valley is an hour from the college's retreat center. Approximately half of its undergraduates reside on campus. Eight men's and women's varsity teams compete in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and the concert choir and instrumental ensembles tour widely.

We are pleased to announce that half of our $25 Premium Reserved seats have been SOLD during our first calling session this past Saturday in only one hour! Parent Volunteers Needed
Parents with trucks and several strong people needed to assist the Music Department with the hauling of choir risers to the upcoming UHS Music Venues.
Dates: November 8 (Magic of the Arts), December 4th and May 7th. We also need volunteers for Drama events in January and the end of May.
The goal is to have a list of at least 10-15 parents with trucks and at least 15 really strong people to help with the heavy lifting.

Host Families Needed: Week of October 7th - October 11th
This fall, a choir from the oldest school in Germany, the Gymnasium Paulinum (founded in 797), will visit Fresno beginning October 7 for a week of concerts, school exchanges and sightseeing. (You may recall that two years ago the Sunnyside High School choir visited Munster on their Sister City Tour and did an exchange with the Gymnasium Paulinum.)
The culmination of their week in Fresno will be a concert on October 11 with our own Fresno County Youth Choir.
20 host families have been recruited so far, but still need 6 or 7 more.
We are looking for host families to house one or two students during their visit.
As a host family, your responsibilities would be: Transportation (drop off in the morning, pick up in the evening) Morning meal and one or two evening meals Safe and healthy environment

Travel Club Starting up Ever thought of taking an adventurous trip to somewhere you have never been before? Here is you chance. Travel Club is getting organized for the summer of 2010. We are planning a trip to Paris, Southern France, and Spain. We will have a meeting in room 18 at 5:30 on Thursday Sept. 25. Parents and students (Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors) that are interested should come to the meeting. This is the best time to sign up as the price and payment plan will never be better than now. Host Families Needed: Week of October 7th - October 11th
This fall, a choir from the oldest school in Germany, the Gymnasium Paulinum (founded in 797), will visit Fresno beginning October 7 for a week of concerts, school exchanges and sightseeing. (You may recall that two years ago the Sunnyside High School choir visited Munster on their Sister City Tour and did an exchange with the Gymnasium Paulinum.)
The culmination of their week in Fresno will be a concert on October 11 with our own Fresno County Youth Choir.
20 host families have been recruited so far, but still need 6 or 7 more.
We are looking for host families to house one or two students during their visit.
As a host family, your responsibilities would be: Transportation (drop off in the morning, pick up in the evening) Morning meal and one or two evening meals Safe and healthy environment

Science Olympiad, Math Team and other interested students are invited to a presentation by Charlie Nelson on his experience at COSMOS last summer. His area of investigation was in astronomy and number theory/cryptography. COSMOS is summer science and math program that a number of UHS students have had the privilege of attending over the last several years. Come hear more about it.

Magic of The Arts Update
So far we have over 136 families signed up to be called to order their tickets for this year's "Magic of the Arts" to be held on Sat, Nov 8th, 7:00 pm at the Saroyan Theatre!
Our wonderful Phoenix Alliance Parent Phone Tree Volunteers will begin calling those on the list starting at 10:00 AM Sat, Sept 20th.
Last year so many families helped out by purchasing or selling extra tickets to their family and friends and also reached out to those families or businesses that may be interested in seeing what UHS is all about. We hope to continue that pattern so we can sell out the house. Imagine what an experience it would be for our kids to perform to a sellout crowd at the Saroyan! We can do it, but we need everyone's help.
So, take advantage of the Lucky 7 Deal, Buy 6 and receive 1 ticket FREE and let's make this the best "Magic of the Arts" ever! Premium Preferred tickets are $25 and General Seating tickets are $12. Parent Volunteers Needed
Parents with trucks and several strong people needed to assist the Music Department with the hauling of choir risers to the upcoming UHS Music Venues.
Dates: November 8 (Magic of the Arts), December 4th and May 7th. We also need volunteers for Drama events in January and the end of May.
The goal is to have a list of at least 10-15 parents with trucks and at least 15 really strong people to help with the heavy lifting.

PSAT
The PSAT will be administered to all 9th-11th grade students on Wednesday, October 15th. The PSAT/NMSQT is practice for the real SAT, which most students will need to take in order to apply for college. The PSAT/NMSQT is also used as the basis for qualification in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program in a student's junior year.
In order for students to receive their scores, they need to submit $15 to their English teachers by September 30th. Please make all checks payable to "University High School."
JCL The Junior Classical League is forming for the 2008-09 school year. Chapter sign-ups begin Tuesday, the 23rd and continue through October 3rd. The cost is $10. In order to attend the convention in the March, you must be a member of the JCL chapter. Turn-in you money to Mrs. Phannaphob or Mrs. Downer.

The goal is to have a list of at least 10-15 parents with trucks and at least 15 really strong people to help with the heavy lifting.

UHS Tennis Congratulations to the UHS Girls Tennis Team! On September 12th and 13th, the UHS girls tennis team competed in the California High School Girls Tennis Classic held in Fresno. 96 schools competed in this years 2 day tournament and UHS took home second place in their division after winning 5 of their 6 matches and tyeing the 6th! What a great way to start! The 11 girls on the team are Danielle Roberts, Margot Brulard, Alexandra Larralde, Katharine McGregor, Katie Plunkett, Haley Woolf, Hannah Plunkett, Sally Larsen, Megan Baugh, Claire Jaramishian and Jacqueline Tung.

Pacific Preview Day University of the Pacific will be hosting a Preview Day for perspective students on Saturday, October 11, 2008 and Saturday, November 15, 2008 from 9:00am to 2:30pm. "Air Denison" Program As a small, private, liberal arts college, located in Granville, Ohio, Denison University knows it often can prove to be challenging for potential students to visit their campus. As a result, sevral years ago, the college developed their Air Denison program. This program allows students the chance to visit anytime this fall between September 21, 2008 and December 7, 2008 or come to a pre-planned program available on these days:

Phantom of the Opera Trip The price is in. We have reserved 90 student tickets for the Phantom when it is in Hollywood. We plan to leave Saturday Feb. 14, 2009, in the morning at 7:00, eat lunch at Universal Citywalk, see the 2:00 matinee, head home when it is over, stop for dinner on the way, and be home around 10:00. Ice Cream Social Attention All New Students: The peer mentors and Mrs. Bird will be hosting an Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, September 17th during lunch (12:00-12:55) in the CSUF Amphitheater. Bring your lunch, have some ice cream and enjoy the afternoon hanging out with your peer mentors.
Northern CA College Field Trip - Mandatory Parent Meeting We will be having a mandatory meeting for all parents of students attending the upcoming college field trip. The meeting is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. this Thursday in Room 10. The final schedule will be distributed at this time!
Late Start Minimum Day on Thursday UHS classes will not begin until 10:00 a.m. on Thursday due to our "late start minimum day schedule." Students enrolled in college classes that meet befoe 10:00 a.m., should attend these classes. The schedule for Thursday is as follows:
